ITCARD launches Europe’s first biometric ATM shared network in Poland

According to BBR, Polish banking services provider ITCARD has launched the first biometric ATM shared network in Europe for use by all banking customers.

Called Planet Cash, the ATM network uses Finger Vein technology provided by Hitachi Europe as part of an agreement signed with ITCARD in March 2014.

The contract covers the implementation of Finger Vein biometric technology in a total of 1730 Wincor Nixdorf and Diebold ATMs situated across Poland, this year.

A privacy compliant biometric solution, Finger Vein technology is expected to enable customers to withdraw cash and perform other operations, such as balance check, immediate money transfer, by their finger, without a requirement for card and PIN.

ITCARD CEO Jaroslaw Chrzanowski said Finger Vein is a vital technology in the company's strategy.

"We've already been using this technology for ATMs in the cooperative banking sector," Chrzanowski added.

Hitachi Europe Central Eastern Europe Information Systems Group regional manager Tadeusz Woszczynski said: "The Planet Cash project is the biggest step so far for ATMs in Europe that utilises Finger Vein technology to create a new standard for secure, quick and convenient banking transactions for society."

Having already installed more than 500 ATMs, Planet Cash aims to install an additional 1500 ATMs from Wincor Nixdorf and Diebold by the end of 2014, which will give ITCARD an 11% share of the Polish ATM market.

Planet Cash ATMs are expected to be situated in the most convenient locations across the country, including retailer chains, such as Biedronka, Carrefour and Intermarché as well as in the central areas of the main Polish cities.
