Open source platforms sometimes become concern for its users. Yes, I am talking about Google Play store where a fake antivirus named Virus Shield has duped thousands of users.
This fake antivirus claimed to avert “harmful apps from being installed on your device”, “protects your information”, and “scans apps, settings, files, and media in real time”.
However, while digging into this application, android police found a completely different image of this antivirus as it does not fulfill any above conditions that it claimed.
It neither scans nor removes any malware but changes a red “X” image into a red tick mark. During the short period, the antivirus that is available at $3.99 has managed to cross 10K downloads and users gave it 4.7/5 rating.
The good news is Google Play has removed this app, but whether the users got refund of their money or not, it is still unclear. Even android police also said, there is no developer website listed on play store but only an email address Jesse_Carter@live.com, has revealed little information. The developer of this fake antivirus is “Deviant Solution”.
Below is an image that shows a banned account at Sythe.org, where the user "Inception Deviant" is charged of attempting to cheat people out of different low-value game items.
You can report about the Virus Shield via the Play Store app. To do so,
• Go to the listing on your device,
• Tap "flag as inappropriate”,
• Then tap "other objection" and write out why this person is a complete scammer.
• Alternatively, you can report it on the web.
Google Play store is an open source platform where culprits try to manipulate the image of Google by developing fake app and cheating users.
We have heard that android is having many apps that comprise malware, but this fake antivirus has shocked everyone including Google Play Store. It compels Google to pay attention to it.
A recent survey said, android is a dominant player in spreading mobile malware with so many malicious apps, but this fake antivirus has shocked everyone including Google Play Store.
