The Syrian Electronic Army*(SEA) has been targeting news publications, computers, and various other companies. In 2013, it claimed responsibility for the hack of the New York Times, the Financial Times, the BBC Weather’s Twitter account, and even went after Twitter.
It appears the official Skype Twitter account has been compromised by the Syrian Electronic Army. The hacking group has taken over the account today, posting several tweets in what appears to be a classic case of phishing.
At this point, Microsoft is redirecting traffic from blogs.skype.com to the Skype home page. The account under which the blog was posted, Shana Pearlman, also displays SEA lines: "Hacked by Syrian Electronic Army.. Stop Spying!" and "Don't use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments.
Hackers are announced the news via Skype Twitter Account.
Today’s message is a bit striking since it’s focused on spying, not the SEA’s usual pro-Syria communication that it leaves when going after websites and social media profiles.
According to the Edward Snowden leaked documents said that Microsoft was "helping the National Security Agency to circumvent the company's own encryption," complying with federal requests for data across products like Outlook, SkyDrive, and Skype. Redmond, however, said interpretations of those documents - namely a story about it from The Guardian - contained "significant inaccuracies."
Regarding this issue Skype responded via their twitter account and said
"our social media properties were targeted today. No user info was compromised. We’re sorry for the inconvenience."
